Dhobi Ghat Review

Watching a 95-minute-break-free movie (no interval here!) means a break from munching, slurping and burping (unless you stock up before you enter the screen). But for Dhobi Ghat, unfortunately, this undivided attention was completely undeserved. What was portrayed as a film on Mumbai diaries, came across as obvious lines scribbled on a notepad. Perhaps it would be perceived differently by a non-Mumbaikar, but if you've lived in this city, you don't need to be told why people go to Marine Drive or why The Gateway of India is thronged by click-happy tourists. It's like telling Mary about her little lamb (she doesn't want to know!).

So, the movie is about four unrelated characters, who happen to discover each other accidently and then continue leading their lives just as they were before. So basically, if they hadn't met, the result of this film would remain unchanged (right?). Anyway, Arun (Aamir Khan), a suave smoker and artist (in that order), has an overnight hump and dump with Shai (Monica Dogra), an NRI investment banker who wants to capture 'poor India, hungry India' (she puts it in more sophisticated words). Shai is also not shy in inviting her Dhobi, Munna (Prateik Babbar) home for tea and then goes ahead to shoot his portfolio, as he wants to be an actor (when will all the Mumbai underdogs give up on their acting dreams?). While Shai is busy scanning the bylanes of Mumbai with her camera, Arun gets deeply tangled with his new muse, Yasmin (Kriti Malhotra), whose depressing story is filmed in abandoned tapes that he discovers in his newly rented apartment. And then director Kiran Rao lost her pencil. So let's copy-paste the above paragraph two more times and there you go, 95 minutes of your life have been swiped.

Despite the aimlessly drifting script, the performances definitely deserve a mention. Prateik manages a convincing dhobi, rat-killer and gigolo (three professions that are possibly more unrelated that the characters in this film). Monica can be believed as an upper class NRI who wants to connect with the common man in an attempt to connect with her country (reminds you of celebs who click pictures of themselves squeezing cheeks of filthy hobo kids). Aamir manages his pensive role with great flourish, closely competing with the blob of white hair on his head that tries to steal your attention. Kriti does a great job with her narrative on Mumbai but the story of her life is too boring to endure.

It's a great idea to align characters from all walks of life with the background of the city. As a format, it gives you a broad canvas to showcase the multiple perspectives that each of them have about the city. But for some (at least the more traditional movie-goers), the concept of a story is that it should lead you somewhere. Or these accidental meetings (as shown in this movie) should atleast transform either of the characters consequently in some way. Even clothes in a washing machine appear different after twirling around for a while. Moral of this non-story: when life gives you a dhobi, serve him tea in your cup and if you're a rich and lonely hag, make him your dirty laundry.

Ten reasons to watch Raavanan!

1. For Mani Ratnam fans, this one is reason enough, but for you sceptics out there, here are nine more!

2. If you thought Iruvar, Roja and Bombay were Mani Ratnam's best, Raavan/ Raavanan is going to stun you! Says who? Just about everybody who has worked for the project! "Mani Ratnam has made this film like a penance. Mani Ratnam, Vikram and Aishwarya Rai will definitely get National Awards," said lyricist Vairamuthu.

3. Mani Ratnam's Raavanan is also special for its huge star cast: Vikram, Aishwarya Rai, Prithviraj, Karthik, Prabhu, Priyamani, Munna, John Vijay in Tamil and Abhishek Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai, Vikram, Govinda, Ravikissen, Priyamani, Nikhil Dwivedi in Hindi (Raavan).

4. Most parts of the movie were shot in deep interiors of dense forests. Our hero plays a tribal chief!

5. Shyam Kaushal has choreographed the thrilling climax fight. "The shooting for Raavan began in January 2009 in Kolkata, then Ooty, and the climax was shot on Malsej Ghat, where there's a scene on bridges 2,000 feet above mountains. Mani loves challenges and likes challenging his actors and technicians too. His quest for perfection puts them through a grueling routine," he said.

6. For the first time, Vikram simultaneously plays two diametrically different roles in two languages of the same film. Vikram play the role of Dev (Ram) in Hindi and Beera (Raavan) in Tamil.

7. Aishwarya plays the role of Ragini, a spunky classical dance teacher. The first look of the movie shows her dancing gracefully in a song.

8. Interestingly, Aishwarya Rai will dub in her own voice for the Tamil version while Vikram is all set to speak Hindi in Raavan.

9. Another highlight is Prabhu and Karthi, co-stars in the blockbuster Mani Ratnam movie Agni Natchathiram, they team up again for the same director after a long gap.

10. A.R. Rahman's chart-busters, Vairamuthu's adorable lyrics, Santhosh Sivan's marvellous camera work and to top of all, 'The Mani Ratnam factor'. Well Raavanan is definitely one of the most-anticipated films of the year. So get ready for some action this Friday (June 18, 2010).

Snip Trip: Bebo Swoons Over Saif!

Saif Ali Khan perfects the mane angle for his beau Bebo. Reportedly, Kareena Kapoor likes her Junior Nawab with long flowing tresses. And everytime Saif scoots off for a tress turn at his hair stylist Aalim Hakim's parlour, Bebo throws a mighty fit!

Recently, Saif snipped his locks short for 'Agent Vinod'. Though after a filming for a day director Sriram Raghavan opined that a crew cut would suit his character better.

Snip, snip, snip… and Bingo! Saif emerged with short cropped hair (minus Abhishek Bachchan and numbered balls)… and Raghavan beamed an approving grin.

What's better, the cropped cut has found favour with Kareena too, who fondly gushed in a media quote stating, "With the 'Agent Vinod' look, I've fallen in love with my boyfriend all over again!"

Guess, Saif's a cut above the rest…

Govinda leaves Mani Ratnam in the lurch

When the Tamil film fraternity threatened to boycott any actor attending the IIFA awards in Sri Lanka, the Bachchans played it safe by giving the event a miss. Since Mani Ratnam's Raavan - starring Abhishek and Aishwarya - is about to release soon, the family did not want to take a risk. But interestingly, no other actor in the movie had such concerns. Govinda, who has already expressed displeasure over his footage in the film, attended the fest to support his friend Salman Khan.

News is that Salman has been boycotted by the Tamil film federation.

Anyway, Govinda, who is struggling to come back, thought his role of Hanuman in Raavan would be a meaty one. But when he realised that was not the case, he was disappointed. He reportedly refused to promote the film. And now, his appearance at IIFA might have serious repercussions for Mani Ratnam. Considering the fact that Raavan also has a Tamil version, the director can't antagonise the Tamil audiences.

SRK's wish list revealed!

There may be hundreds of directors who'd dream of signing on India's biggest bonafide superstar, Shah Rukh Khan (SRK), but the actor has a wish list of his own. Khan, who is currently shooting for Abhinav Sinha's superhero movie, Ra.

One, on Monday tweeted the names of some directors who he'd like to work with in the future, on the micro blogging website, Twitter. The actor tweeted, "Would love to work with Vishal (Bhardwaj), Anurag (Kashyap or Basu), Mani (Ratnam) sir, Raju (Hirani), and so many other gifted directors.

But we have to have something which suits us all." Khan's list was intriguing, since in the past, he has been associated with projects of most of these directors, and has either turned down, or has not been able to work with them.

Apart from Mani Ratnam, who the actor worked with in Dil Se, SRK has been approached by all the other directors on his wish list. The actor was supposed to work with Hirani on Munnabhai MBBS, but due to his back problems, had to back out from the project.

Sanjay Dutt later stepped into the role, and the movie went on to be a blockbuster. There were also reports that Bhardwaj had approached Khan with a movie, but when Khan suggested changes in the script, the duo fell out.

The actor and director have since patched up. http://in.movies.yahoo.com/news-detail/90382/SRKs-wish-list-revealed.html
